I can honestly say that I have not been this exited about MTSU football in several years. Not only did we just finish of a record setting season on many fronts, but we have a strong team going into next year.

The word "proud" does not do justice to how I feel for those guys, for the fan support and for the entire Blue Raider family of students, alumni and administration.

The best thing I can do is to put all of this praise into someone else's words. Check out the unbelievable and hard to read without dropping your jaw statistics written by Randall Thomason of GoMiddle.com (Rivals.com). Nice work Randall. These guys have really been doing some of the best writing about MT.

Stockstill withdraws from Memphis search

Middle Tennessee head football coach Rick Stockstill has withdrawn his name from consideration in the Memphis coaching search, according to the Daily News Journal.

Stockstill acknowledged this week that he had been contacted by Memphis about its coaching vacancy following Tiger athletic director R.C. Johnson’s decision to dismiss coach Tommy West.

“I am very flattered and honored with the interest that the University of Memphis has shown in me and the MTSU football program,” Stockstill said in the report. “However, at this time I am only focusing on our remaining two games and hopefully a bowl game, and this will allow Memphis to continue its search for their next coach.”

Middle Tennessee is 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Sun Belt games.

The Blue Raiders have remaining games against Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe, with a likely bowl bid coming at the end of the season.

On a day when MTSU will dedicate a Veterans Memorial on campus and observe Armed Services/Veterans Day, the Blue Raider football team will make a statement of its own in observance of the holiday.

Coach Rick Stockstill opened Tuesday's weekly press conference by announcing the team will wear insignia of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment on its helmets starting Saturday and until the unit returns from a scheduled second tour in Iraq.

The 278ths is set for deployment again in Iraq in February. It is the largest National Guard unit in Tennessee.

The Raiders will carry a three-game Sun Belt Conference win streak into Saturday's 3:15 p.m. kickoff against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Middle became bowl eligible with a 48-21 win over Florida International here Saturday, lifting the Raiders to 6-3 on the year.

Lafayette is 5-4 overall and coming off a 21-18 win over Arkansas State on the road.

In honor of the Salute to Armed Services/Veterans Day, we will be honoring the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment out of Knoxville by wearing their insignia to show respect for everything they do for this country. We will leave this insignia on our helmets until they return home from Iraq, so they will know our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families. I hope everyone will come to this game, not only to support Middle Tennessee and our football team, but to come out and support the 278th.

Blue Raiders look to tame Ragin’ Cajuns

The Blue Raiders look to extend a three-game winning streak Saturday at 3:15 p.m. as the Ragin’ Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette visit Floyd Stadium.

MT will look to its rejuvenated rushing attack against a ULL defense giving up 162.7 yards per game.

Sophomore running back D.D. Kyles is coming off back-to-back 100-yard games against Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University, and has helped fill the void left by the absence of Phillip Tanner.

Junior quarterback Dwight Dasher is also coming off consecutive weeks where he rushed for 130 and 178 yards, respectively.

“It is a direct reflection on our offensive line,” head coach Rick Stockstill said. “They have played their three best games of the season. D.D. has run better because he has had more opportunities. He has improved setting up his blocks and reacting to the defense. Dwight has had some dynamic runs as well.”

Dasher looked shaky in the third quarter of an otherwise good performance last week against FIU, throwing three interceptions on MT’s first four possessions.

“There is 70 to 85 plays in a game and he made three poor decisions,” Stockstill said. “There are highs and lows. Everything is not going to be 30 to 40 points per half. How you respond to adversity is what is important.”

The Ragin’ Cajuns have given up 229 yards per game through the air, so opportunities to make plays will be there for Dasher. Mistakes will be costly, however, as ULL has intercepted the opposing quarterback 13 times this season. Gerren Blount, Maurice Rolle and Dwight Bentley led the team with three interceptions each.

ULL’s primary offensive playmaker is quarterback Chris Masson, an efficient signal-caller who has thrown for eight touchdowns and rushed for five more in his nine starts this season.

“He is a good player, Stockstill said. “He has done a great job of leading their offense. He is a tough, competitive guy who understands what they want to do and has led them to some good wins this season.”

With running back Undrea Sails out for the season with a fractured leg, the Ragin’ Cajuns will turn to a large group of less experienced backs. The most productive of the group, Brad McGuire, has averaged 5.1 yards per carry and ran for four touchdowns.

“They’re still a great running team,” senior defensive tackle Brandon Perry said. “They’re a different team this year too. Running the ball is one of their main goals and something they always want to do. It will be a very tough game this week.”

The Blue Raiders are still in the mix for the Sun Belt Conference Championship, trailing Troy University by just one game, with the Trojans traveling to Fayetteville, Ark. to take on the University of Arkansas.

"We have no control over what happens with Troy,” Stockstill said. We have a chance, but we need help. The only thing we can control is how we play against Louisiana-Lafayette.”

The game will include the Salute to Armed Services/Veterans, with the Blue Raiders wearing a helmet sticker with the Tennessee-based 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The team will wear the insignia until the regiment leaves Iraq, expected to be in January 2011.

“We just want to show respect for the men and women who are protecting our country,” Stockstill said. “This is a way to honor the entire mid-state and I hope everyone comes out Saturday to show their support."

High stakes are on the line as Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic face off Saturday in Boca Raton. The winner will earn a spot in the upper echelon of the conference standings and vastly improve potential bowl possibilities.

GoMiddle.com breaks down who and what to watch when the Blue Raiders and Owls tee it up.

THE BIG STATS
HURRIES AND SACKS BY MT’S DEFENSE- FAU trails only Troy in the Sun Belt in passing offense and pass efficiency, which means the Owls are very dangerous every time Rusty Smith drops back to pass. FAU’s offensive line hasn’t allowed a sack in the last two weeks, but MT’s defensive front leads the league in sacks. The cumulative effect of how many times the Raiders can hurry Smith into a forced throw, sack him, or hit him will be a key to the game. MT has to get to him.

MT’S RUSHING YARDAGE- The Raider ground game had a bit of a coming out party last week against WKU. While FAU poses more of a challenge than the Hilltoppers, the Owl run defense has still struggled. MT can open up much more of its offense if FAU is forced to respect the Raiders on the ground, particularly players other than quarterback Dwight Dasher on the ground.

YOU’LL KNOW IT’S GOING WELL IF…
MT’S DEFENSE EXCELS ON THIRD DOWN- Among several impressive offensive stats, one that stands out perhaps above all for FAU is the Owls’ excellence on third down. FAU leads the league in that category and has converted more than 46 percent of its third down plays. On the flip side, MT’s defense leads the league in third down defensive percentage. If the Raiders emerge with the upper hand on FAU’s third downs, then MT will have taken a normal advantage for the Owls and turned it against them.

FAU BECOMES ONE DIMENSIONAL- FAU running back Alfred Morris is one of the best backs in the conference. It would be hard enough to stop him even if the Owls didn’t also have an outstanding passing attack. MT has to find a way to contain Morris so that the Owls face more predictable down and distance situations. If the combination of Morris running and Smith passing keeps the defense off balance, it will be hard to keep the Owls from piling up points.

YOU’LL KNOW IT’S GOING POORLY IF…
IT TAKES EIGHT IN THE BOX TO STOP THE RUN- If Morris starts the game productive on the ground, MT may have to adjust to prevent him from wearing down the defensive front. That could mean trouble if the Owls are able to crank up their play action passing game in their pro style offense. The Blue Raider front seven needs to rise to the occasion against the run so the secondary can focus most of its time defending the aerial assault.

THERE ARE MISSED OPPORTUNITIES ON OFFENSE- This is a game that will require touchdowns to win. Although MT kicker Alan Gendreau has been perfect this season, the Blue Raiders would prefer to see him kicking extra points instead of field goals this week. Red zone trips need to end in touchdowns and anytime the MT offense is granted quality field position to start a drive, it needs to capitalize. In a game that could easily require five touchdowns to win, even a single missed opportunity could be the difference in victory and defeat.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC OWLS: WHO TO WATCH
QB Rusty Smith, 6-5/230, Senior
THE NUMBERS: 58.7 percent completion percentage, 1,611 yards, 12 TDs, 3 INTs
WHY HE’S IMPORTANT: Smith is arguably the Sun Belt’s best quarterback and his arm makes the Owls a threat on every play.
BEST CASE: Smith is going to put up some numbers, but MT hopes to hurry him and prevent him from dominating the game through the air.
WORST CASE: If Smith has time to throw, he is capable of a career night every game. FAU’s offensive line will pose a significant challenge to MT’s talented defensive front.

RB Alfred Morris, 5-11/222, Sophomore
THE NUMBERS: 705 rushing yards, 5.2 yards per carry, 6 TDs
WHY HE’S IMPORTANT: Morris is a bruising runner that provides a great balance to Smith and the passing game.
BEST CASE: The Raiders want to hold Morris well under 100 yards on the ground to keep FAU’s offense as one dimensional as possible.
WORST CASE: If Morris is able to run against the front seven, the Raiders will be vulnerable to big play action passes and are more likely to get worn down.

WR Chris Bonner, 6-3/205, Senior
THE NUMBERS: 21 catches for 432 yards, 5 TDs
WHY HE’S IMPORTANT: Bonner is FAU’s best big play threat through the air, averaging more than 20 yards per reception.
BEST CASE: MT will gladly surrender some catches to Bonner if the secondary keeps him in front and prevents huge gainers.
WORST CASE: Bonner’s combination of size and speed can win a lot of individual battles for deep balls and FAU will take some shots to him down the field.

DL Dino Cox, 6-3/280, Junior
THE NUMBERS: 18 tackles, 5 TFL, 3 sacks
WHY HE’S IMPORTANT: Cox plugs up space in the line and typically makes big plays if he gets his hands near the ball.
BEST CASE: MT wants to wall off Cox at the line to prevent him from breaking through quickly into the backfield, where he can do major damage.
WORST CASE: Cox’s size and strength could prove very troublesome at the line of scrimmage if MT can’t contain him.

LB Michael Lockley, 6-3/245, Junior
THE NUMBERS: 58 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1 FR
WHY HE’S IMPORTANT: Lockley leads the Owls in tackles and is around the ball on most plays.
BEST CASE: Lockley is likely to rack up a lot of tackles again, but that is fine with MT as long as he doesn’t cause turnovers.
WORST CASE: Lockley is around the ball so much that it’s very possible he could strip a ball loose or tip a pass from the undersized Dwight Dasher.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - QuarterbackDwight Dasher sprinted for a career-long 74-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to provide the winning difference in a come-from-behind 27-20 Middle Tennessee victory at Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt action. The Owls had one last chance, but a fourth-down pass was ruled out-of-bounds, ending the thriller on Halloween in front of 15,568 fans at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Dasher's career-best dash with 5:31 remaining gave the Blue Raiders a pair of players over the 100-yard barrier, as he finished with 108, trailing only the 140 accumulated by teammate D.D. Kyles, who made his second career start.

Neither offense was able to mount much on either of their opening two possessions, but Florida Atlantic scored first on a 38-yard field goal by Ross Gornall at 8:32 in the first quarter. The Blue Raider defense was able to keep the Owls from marching further down the field despite starting the drive on the FAU 44.

On the next MT drive, Dasher fumbled a pass attempt and Florida Atlantic defensive tackle Josh Savidge scooped up the loose ball and returned it 28 yards down to the 12-yard line. However, a celebration penalty pushed the start of the drive back 15 yards. A short time later, on a fourth down play from the two-yard line, Rusty Smith located a wide-open Avery Holley for the game's first touchdown at 3:30 of the first quarter and a 10-0 Owl lead.

The Blue Raiders' capitalized on a blocked punt by SaCoby Carter for their first score, with only 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter.Sherman Neal grabbed the loose ball behind punter Mickey Groody and returned it 29 yards to bring Middle Tennessee (5-3, 3-1 Sun Belt) within three, 10-7.

The next punt did not fare much better for the Owls. The snap went high, forcing Groody to roll to his left, and Neal was in the backfield to record the tackle. It gave the Blue Raiders the ball on the Owl 37. The drive was halted after three plays, but a 46-yard field goal into the wind by Alan Gendreau at 12:15 of the second quarter knotted the scoring at 10-10.

Florida Atlantic took its next drive right down the field to reclaim the lead with 8:53 remaining in the half. Smith capped the drive by connecting on an 18-yard strike to Cortez Gent in the back left corner for the touchdown, giving FAU a 17-10 advantage.

The margin nearly grew to 10 on the next Owl possession, but as Gornall lined up for a 34-yard field goal, Marcus Udell broke through the line and blocked the kick to keep the Blue Raiders within seven with under three minutes left in the half.

On Middle Tennessee's second play after the turnover on downs, Kyles sprinted 43 yards down the left sideline on his only rush of the first half. The Blue Raiders were not able to advance any further.

Udell then intercepted Smith with 31 seconds to go, giving MT one last shot at a score before the intermission. The pickoff was Smith's first in 187 attempts. Gendreau drained a 23-yard field goal as time expired to pull Middle Tennessee within four, 17-13, at the break.

The Blue Raider ground attack was the focus of the second half's opening possession. The Florida Atlantic (2-5, 2-2 Sun Belt) defense held firm after a pair of Kyles carries brought Middle Tennessee into Owl territory. The defense forced Gendreau to line up for a 47-yard field goal and the kick went wide left, snapping his streak of 12 straight to start the season.

Once again, neither team could manage much of an offensive threat as the clock ticked in the third quarter. Jeremy Kellem was able to get a hand on a Groody punt halfway through the period to raise the blocked kick total to three, the highest by a Middle Tennessee team since the Blue Raiders matched the effort in 2002 against North Texas.

As the fourth quarter started, a 42-yard field goal from Gornell went through the uprights to increase the lead back to seven, 20-13, with 14:55 left. Middle Tennessee wasted no time in evening the score at 20, covering 80 yards in 1:02, as Kyles capped the drive by finding pay dirt from eight yards out to become the first Blue Raider running back to pass the century mark since Phillip Tanner against North Texas last fall.

Udell garnered his second interception of the game on the next FAU drive, intercepting Smith at the Owl 48 yardline. Middle Tennessee threatened to take the lead on its next possession, but a bad snap on the field goal try kept the score deadlocked with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Danny Carmichael led the Blue Raider defense with a career-high 15 tackles, while Cam Robinson added a career-best 14 stops. Kevin Brown and Kellem each registered 10 tackles for Middle Tennessee.

The Blue Raiders will return to the friendly confines of Floyd Stadium for their next three games. The homestand begins at 3:30 p.m. next week against FIU.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE POSTGAME NOTES:

KYLES GETS 100: Sophomore D.D. Kyles, who made his second career start today, registered the first 100-yard rushing game of his career and the first by a Blue Raider since Phillip Tanner had 159 yards against North Texas last year. Kyles rushed 13 times for a career-best 140 yards and a touchdown with 97 of his yards coming in the second half. It went down as just the sixth 100-yard rushing game under Rick Stockstill and two of those have come against FAU.

DASHER TOPS 100 TOO: QB Dwight Dasher recorded his second career 100-yard rushing game against FAU. The junior rushed 14 times for 108 yards, including the go-ahead fourth quarter touchdown. Dasher's 74-yard TD run was the longest of his career and the longest by a Blue Raider since Phillip Tanner went 79 yards in 2007 against Louisville for a score.

REPLAY: SaCoby Carter raced in to block an FAU punt in the first quarter that walk-on Sherman Neal picked up and sprinted 29 yards to the endzone for a touchdown. In the Blue Raiders' last visit to FAU, Jeremy Kellem blocked a punt that was returned for a score by Michael Cannon. The block was the first of Carter's career and the 29th for the Blue Raiders in the FBS era. The team added its 30th later in the quarter.

GENDREAU STREAK ENDS: Sophomore Alan Gendreau extended his consecutive made field goal streak to 12 in a row before seeing it come to an end with a missed 46 yarder in the second half. After a failed MT drive in the first quarter, Gendreau lined up from 46 yards out against the wind. The Apopka, Fla., native split the uprights on a kick that would have easily been good from 50 yards. Gendreau, who later added a 23 yarder at the end of the half, is now 22-for-27 for his career. The 22 field goals ties Archie Arrington for seventh place on the all-time list.

BLOCK PARTY: Middle Tennessee blocked two punts (SaCoby Carter andJeremy Kellem) and a field goal (Marcus Udell) against FAU for its first multiple block game since 2002. That year the Blue Raiders blocked three kicks against North Texas. The three blocks today give the Blue Raiders 11 blocked kicks under Rick Stockstill and five for the season. Overall in 124 FBS games, the Blue Raiders have blocked 12 FGs, 11 punts and 8 PATs. The five blocked kicks this season is the most since the Blue Raiders had five in 2002.

UDELL COMES UP BIG: Senior Marcus Udell turned in one of the best games of his career against FAU. Udell blocked an FAU field goal in the second quarter for his first career block, then on the next FAU possession, he intercepted a Rusty Smith pass to break Smith's streak of 187 attempts without a pick. Udell later added an interception in the fourth quarter to give him a team-best four for the year.

GEE PASSES LYONS: Senior Desmond Gee recorded 123 all-purpose yards against FAU to move up further on the all-time list at Middle Tennessee. Gee passed Vince Hall for seventh and Brigham Lyons for sixth as he ran his career total to 3,903 yards. He needs only 13 more yards to catch Mike Moore for fifth place.

QUICK HITTERS: Jeremy Kellem's blocked punt was the third of his career and the second against FAU ... Middle Tennessee had two players rush for over 100 yards in a game for the first time since ReShard Lee and Dwone Hicks accomplished the feat against New Mexico State in 2002 ... Senior Mark Thompson played in his 45th career game today against FAU and the Blue Raider FBS record is 47 set by Trevor Jenkins ... Middle Tennessee last played on Halloween in 1998 when it defeated Southeast Missouri on the road ... D.D. Kyles had a career long run of 43 yards in the second quarter, his only carry of the first half ... Jamal Lewis started the second half at left guard and Harold Turner started the second half at receiver ... MT had not won in the state of Florida since 2005 until this afternoon ... MT only had 73 yards of total offense in the first half before accumulating 259 in the second half

There were some positives and some definite negatives to the game on Saturday. The defense played better than expected, and the offense made adjustments and got better. Special teams was as bad as I have ever seen it. The offense will be a work in progress and we knew that. The changes made at halftime helped a lot and were able to move the ball. The good thing is, we have played by far the best team we will play this season, and did fine. Next up is Memphis, who didn't look that good against Ole Miss. Should be a great atmosphere for the Blackout game, so everyone come out and enjoy it!!

Yes, I know, been a while. A few games to say the least. We certainly have had no less dedication during our time off. After all, the Blue Crew or our friends have been to every single game since our last post. I went up to WKU in the freezing rain and wind to watch us knock off the Hilltoppers and their "Third Down THUNDER!".

THis weekend we played host to North Texas. It used to be that this matchup was the key game in the Sun Belt. Then came along Troy and they rose to the top the past few years as UNT faded. Anyway, the Blue Raiders toppled them this week by almost breaking our team record of 47 points in a half. The evening was fun and cold for all and a great way to close out the home season.

Anyway, some rough play by the Blue Raiders and some really bad calls by the referees towards the end of the game helped everything get out of control.

A bright spot today - we mey some great folks from Specialty Foods Group (the people behind everything from Nathans and Fischers hot dogs and sausages to deli meats - www.sfgtrust.com). They were kind enough to set up us with lunch and some drinks before the game. They have a great set-up in an old caboose right across from the stadium. Very cool place and very nice people. Thanks to Luther Oberhaus for the hospitality.

Yes, it has been a few weeks since we last posted, I get that. I know, heck, we all know, we should be better at posting. It is probably more related to that fact that this is a short stretch of weeks where we are away and that we, as fans, are battling being "just happy" to be fans and the acknowledgement that we are not championship (S-Belt) contenders this year. Hey, we knew this in August. We understood that the chances were slim that we would be at a bowl in December. But, hope is eternal.

Anway...we are on the bus to Louisville. Thanks to the BRAA, the fine folks at Sprint wireless (my cell modem) and my compatriots at XMi Commercail Real Estate (pays for modem), we can blog to the world direct from a comfy Greyline bus somewhere in rural KY.

How do we feel this morning? Good. Can we win? Yep. UL is probably looking for a statement win during a season that they have struggled. MT...well, we need that statement win during a season where those are the ones we must have.

WOW!!! What an ending! That is why you play 60 minutes in a football game. Our guys never gave up, and as a result, we get the win. We showed a lot of heart at the end of that game by staying with it. We played
poorly for the first 50 minutes on offense, but we never lost faith. Good job guys.

Now it is time for FIU. Keep up the good work. I think the hardest of our schedule is behind us, and the rest of the way if we can keep our confidence up, and take care of business, we should be playing in December.

So Rich Brooks' latest issue is that he thinks Middle Tennessee coaches stole signals during the game, and that is why we played so well. READ IT HERE

Is that the best you can come up with to help yourself sleep at night knowing the better team lost that game because you had a bunch of SEC homer referees? You don't agree with me, then go ask the Kentucky commentators calling the game that night and they will tell you. Coach Brooks also goes on to say that we are in collusion with the University of Tennessee.

How stupid could you possibly be??

Why don't you just accept the fact that Middle Tennessee is the better team and we would win that game 7 out of 10 times we played. 10 out of 10 if you use impartial referees! So, get off your high horse and realize that you are not the great coach that you think you are. If you wanted to see a great coach, you could simply look at the other sideline. He is the tall, skinny coach wearing the hat.

And one other thing...a combined 21 out of 22 upperclass starters does not constitute rebuilding. You won the game, so quit crying like a baby.

I know everyone was as heartbroken as I was about the ending of the Kentucky game, especially since once again we got jobbed on several occasions by the SEC referees. However, we had our opportunities as well and cannot lay this one on the refs.

Now on to Arkansas State. They are the other team in the Sun Belt to beat a power conference tea this year, and return possibly their best team, and have their best chance to beat us. We have to remember as a team that we can beat anyone, and not get it in our heads that Arkansas State may be a lesser opponent. They are not. And why are they not?

Because they are our next opponent.

The Blue Raiders are pumped coming off of their amazing 24-14 win while hosting Maryland. TO THE MATTRESSES this week as Coach Stock prepares our boys to take to the gridiron as we are hosted by Kentucky this week. We'll travel to Lexington for the second time in our D-1 career. The first visit had a bench clearing fight that sadly put the Blue Raiders on ESPN, but not the way we wanted. A total of 4 players ended up being ejected from that game (2 starters for us and 2 back-ups for them - we're still scratching our heads over that officiating) and Kentucky ended up with a 44-22 win against us. We're not looking for a repeat of any of that this week. We just want to prove ourselves as a solid team and one these SEC schools can't overlook. It will be a tough week for us preparing for a tough game. For those of you in the boro not able to make it to Lexington, we'll also be having a watch party somewhere. We'll the GFBC would normally say "we'll make you swim with the fishes", but in this case, I think "swim with the turtles" is more appropriate. The Blue Raiders captured an amazing victory Saturday by beating a Maryland team that may have slightly overlooked us. We dominated the ball with a time of possession over 40 minutes. In the D1A era for our program, this is the biggest victory we have had. A great weekend for football as the Titan's also triumphed, but a tough week ahead. MTSU travels to Lexington to take on the Wildcats in a game that will be a battle. Kentucky has a very tough defense and is surely a better team than Maryland. Our hands will be full. Blue Raiders, RIDE ON TO VICTORY!!

As usual, our day began early this morning setting up the tailgate. As fans and friends have slowly begun to arrive and talk college football, I have been left wondering what our chances are against our ACC foe.

We are certainly facing a lesser opponent, no doubt, than the VA Cavaliers from last year. However, few would argue that our own team is in a lesser position based not only on graduation but also on injuries. Just how do our Blue Raiders stack up against the Terps? To answer this I have looked around the web for answers rather than write my own analysis since I was a bit off last week...

Here is what I found:

The Tennessean does not paint a pretty picture for the Blue Raiders HERE or even HERE or HERE. Whether it is pointing out that we are 30+ pounds lighter and 3 inches shorter on the line or that we are "craving" a big home win, our local rag just does not give me the feeling that they like our chances too much (even if they write an article about our near win last year against Virginia).

Maryland fans are pretty sure the game will be over by halftime HERE on the Scout.com message boards. As well, they don't like our town HERE.

The Washington Post feels that the Terps will take advantage of our youth and (lack of) size in this Terp Insider article.

This all leaves me feeling very empty. Kind of like when I went to California to have a discussion with Jack Woltz about giving the lead role in his next big movie to Johnny Fontane and he told me that Johnny "ruined" his most prized starlet. Of course, I think he got our point the next morning and Johnny got that role. Anyway, I think I actually like our chances better this week than last. Troy is a tough game, no matter what. Our first game of the season is typically poorly played. We have a nice history of making improvements for game two and that might just be the case tonight.

We'll see. It sure would be nice to score a win. If not, I still think I'll show up for the next home game...

It is about 1:30, the weather feels great, the grill has been fired, and the satellite is up and running. The big questions for the day is: Do we have a chance?

I say yes, and here's why: We have very athletic defensive linemen, and can get around their monster offensive front. Also, We can spread the field. We have to play perfect ball today, but this is definitely possible.

So, I am sitting at my desk and nothing is getting accomplished. I have taken the whole day off on Thursday so I can tailgate from 7:30 AM til kickoff. I have also taken Friday off so I can recuperate after celebrating our win!

After feeding the team on Sunday, I am pumped about Thursday night. You could tell the players and coaches were pumped as well. They are tired of beating on each other and are ready to beat up on some Trojans!!

But, as I sit here, all I can think of are bloody marys in the morning followed by cornhole and beer in the afternoon. The grill will be fired and burning bright and smelling of burgers and ribs! There is nothing like tailgating for Middle Tennessee football and we are less than two days away.

Until then, I guess I will get to this pile of work sitting on my desk. Come on Thursday.......you can't get here fast enough!!!!

Is Troy really worthy of all the hype? - by Tom Hagen (consigliere)

So for the past few weeks folks around here have been pretty excited about the beginning of the football season. Regardless of whether we were barreling towards a game with the USC Trojans or their lesser counterparts from southern Alabama, Blue Raider fans are downright excited that summer is closing out and football is approaching. I have noticed however, that there is an undercurrent of trepidation of having to open the season (regular and conference) against a foe that has generally led the Sunbelt Conference since the demise of North Texas. Now just why is that? Is Troy really worth all the hype?

I've been thinking about this for a few days now.

I was sharing it with a friend of mine who is a big Auburn Tiger fan. He outright laughed. His reason: His Tigers or War Eagles or whatever stole away one Tony Franklin, former Offensive Coordinator for the Trojans. I was not quite sure why this would matter a great deal, most teams in our fine conference are regularly depleted of coaching staff as they move on to bigger and better pastures with more money and opportunity. Then I remembered that horrible night in November 2006. We were right on the verge of our first bowl trip in the 1A era with a nice jaunt down to the Big Easy. Ouch. It still hurts. You see, it was the fine Mr. Franklin that led those Trojans right down the field, twice in 12 simple plays(with some help from our defense...) to squeak past and dash our hopes (if only for a few days) of going to a bowl. Sure it hurt then but the trip to Ford Field was not so bad....

Then I was thinking about the fact that our more experienced O line had been depleted this summer. That led me to a discussion with a friend who is a former defensive end for an SEC team that was rarely at the top of the heap. He brought up a game from 2005 against his former team (on which he was playing) where our Blue Raiders were supposedly down a few important folks (Chris Henry for example) but managed to pull it out after scoring only 21 points in three games.

Finally, I was thinking about this Troy team of 2008. How do they compare to the Troy teams we have known in the past? Can they rebound from an ending to their season (the loss to FL Atlantic) that was surely as bitter as ours was at their hand the year before? They've got 5 starters on their offense that are sophomores. They have an untested kicking game. They also have a brand new quarterback.

So maybe I'm not worried anymore. My bet: a defensive struggle where a few break away plays will determine the outcome.

I can't believe it! I made it through the dead time of no good sports and preseason NFL football is on. That means that college football is just around the corner. Middle Tennessee is playing of three games on August 28th, so we are the first to start the season. And the game is against our arch enemy, and one of the unholy trinity(thanks ESPN.com), Troy Trojans. We are beat up on the offensive line, but our guys know how important the game is to our season. Chills ran down my spine after I turned the TV to ESPN. They’re getting geared up. Starting to see more and more FOOTBALL related “stuff” on now. As I thought about the upcoming season, I logged into www.goblueraiders.com and noticed the countdown timer. At the time of this posting we had 22 days till kickoff for the opening game at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium.. That means of course that the GFBC is anticipating yet another year of stellar tailgating. Burgers, brawts, cheese plates and of course liquid refreshments will accompany the cornhole, satellite TV and the company of old friends and friends yet to be made with our common passion in mind, Blue Raider football. I hope you can spend some time with us this year, especially if you are a visiting team. We always enjoy meeting the “enemy” and having a little pre-game “smack talk”. August 28th. I’ll see you there.

The Off Season Blues by Fredo

While I am a fan of all Middle Tennessee athletics, the three that get me excited the most are football, and men's and women's basketball. Every hard core football fan knows the depression of this time of year. The draft is over and fall camp doesn't start until the first of August. If you are like me, and baseball really isn't your thing, then this is the abyss of sports. Now, I love golf and Nascar, but not to the extent that I love football. There is nothing quite like the morning tailgate that lifts the spirit and just gets you excited about another great weekend of football. The sight of the Blue Grail, the sounds of jazz coming from Bud's truck, and the thrill of setting up the tents and satellites make any hard week worth the wait. As I sit at my computer now, I get excited about our home schedule for the Blue Raiders. We have home games against all of our main adversaries: Troy, Florida Atlantic, and North Texas. You throw Maryland in the Skillet and you have the makings of the best home schedule this fan has seen in 30 years! Troy opens the slate and we want them bad. They have embarrassed us the last two years and we owe them big. Plus, they have our trophy, the Palladium, and I want it back! Florida Atlantic marks another first in our 1-A existence: a home nationally-televised game. And you can rest assured that the Blue Raiders will come to play and the Godfathers Blue Crew will be absolutely jacked for this game! North Texas is a team that we love to hate. They kept us from our first bowl game in our first year of 1-A and we will never forgive them. The owned us for the first five years, but we are fighting back. We have won two years in a row and I plan on making it three this year. Maryland continues a trend of "power 6" teams playing in The Skillet. If you think our home cant be intimidating, go ask Virginia what they think. We also have very easy travel games in Louisville, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Arkansas State, and Western Kentucky. This is shaping up to be a tremendous season for Blue Raider fans. So start the clock, we have only 92 days to go until Blue Raider football rocks the Skillet!!!

Homecoming Week - by Fredo

Bring on Homecoming! What a a difference a few weeks makes!

Four weeks into the season, we were 0-4 and down and out. Fans were talking about tailgating and not football. But we are 5-1 in our last six games and riding an unbelievable high going into our Homecoming game against Louisiana Lafayette, who will serve as the second homecoming opponent in as many weeks in Tennessee.

This game should be over before it begins as Middle Tennessee is riding the leagues number 1 defense and the most accurate passer on offense. And for those that questioned whether Joe Craddock could get the job done, all I have to say is 470 all purpose yards on Saturday.

All indications point to another fine performance by our offense this week. A win this weekend sets up a showdown with Troy for what should be the conference championship. A week after totally dismantling the best offense in the league, we move on to the worst. North Texas's new coach, Tom Dodge, has brought "Dodgeball" to the college level. They look more like the boys from Average Joes than football players. Last week against Troy, the quarterback was sacked nine times. But the kicker is that the defense forced seven turnovers, and you know how many points North Texas scored.......7.

I don't know how that could happen, but it points to the ineptitude of the offense and the luck of their defense. Look for the Blue Raiders to have a field day on the ground with this defensive line that my two-year-old nephew could run through.

Also, we may set a record for sacks two weeks in a row on an offensive line that couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.

The Blue Raiders are on a tear and we are finally seeing the team we expected all year long. Our boys know the odds are long at getting a bowl berth, but we have to help ourselves by winning the last four games. After this week, we should only have to win three more!

I love it when I am right.

For the first time this season, I was questioned on a prediction, and I simply said "wait for the game". It is tough when you mess with the Family.

Middle Tennessee put on a clinic on tackling the quarterback on Saturday. A school-record nine times, Corey Leonard was put on his back with the ball in his hand.

Arkansas State was defeated soundly in every phase of the game. Even their highly touted punt returner managed to get 0 yards on punt returns.

It was great to see Joe Craddock back on the field and see the entire Arkansas State defense's arse's pucker at the same time!

The Blue Raiders have turned the corner and are setting their sights on the rest of the season.

For the rest of the season, the Blue Raiders play in the conference. Our first game of this five game stretch see the Indians of Arkansas State come into the Skillet. This is a team that we have absolutely owned since joining the Sunbelt, going 7-1 against them if I am not mistaken. Hopefully this weekend will see more of the same.

The Indians bring with them a two pronged running attack and will not throw the ball very much. The defensive front of the Blue Raiders will be tested by this team as they may be the best runners we have seen this season. Arkansas State's Corey Leonard won the Sunbelt Player of the Week over our very own Dwight Dasher. This will certainly provide some bulletin board material for the team this week.

Arkansas State's defense has given up some yards, so they may have a problem with the likes of Dasher and Desmond Gee. Middle Tennessee seems to have turned the corner with our win over Memphis.

I look for this weekend to be more of the same. We may now get the blow-out win like we have seen in the past, but Floyd will be jacked up and the atmosphere should be awesome on a perfect football weekend.

Memphis down - Sunbelt to go - by Fredo

What a win it was! The Blue Raiders showed the Memphis Tigers how we do things in the middle of the state on Saturday night.

Our Blue Raiders played a great game on offense and defense. The 1500 or so fans that made the trip from Memphis were treated to what we had been waiting for; a win over a quality team in the fashion we expected. The Band of Blue made the trip which is always a treat. As the clock ticked to zero, we were yelling and wondering what this season has left in store for us.

The last three weeks have seen this team morph into a force to be reckoned with. They are blocking better, defending the pass better, running better, and passing better. We seem to be walking with a air of confidence that we did not have four weeks ago.

After the game, we had to head out to Beale Street to celebrate a well deserved victory. Drinks were had and we even sang the fight song on the stage at Pat O'Brien's.

Now we come into conference play for the rest of the season, so each game counts for a lot.

Our newest rivalry starts this weekend!

An in-state rivalry is something we have been waiting for for a few years now.

Vanderbilt is scared to play us in Murfreesboro, but Memphis is not.

A 3 and 2 series is just what the doctor ordered. The first game of the series between Middle Tennessee and the University of Memphis is scheduled for this Saturday at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. Both teams are having down years, but that doesn't mean that there wont be some good football to be had. Both teams are hungry and neither team wants to be the first to lose what will be a fierce rivalry for years to come.

Memphis has not seen a dual threat quarterback yet, but they will still be playing with emotion after the tragic loss of one of their own to an act of senseless violence. This is a great road trip for Middle Tennessee fans to make as it is a night game in a fun city only 3 hours away.

I look forward to seeing you all there and witnessing the first of 6 wins in a row to end the season for the Blue Raiders!<

Man, we were so close. A questionable spot and a defensive stand away from what we have all been waiting for since the Blue Raiders made the move to 1-A.

We are hungry for a win over a top program and Saturday provided our best chance yet. It was an electric atmosphere inside the Skillet as more than 23K watched the Blue Raiders stand toe to toe and outplay the Cavaliers of Virginia for 59 minutes of football.

People can question the call to punt all they want, but that was the right call. Our defense had been there all night and that was who we wanted on the field at the end. I know fans left the stadium dejected and even angry, but you have to look at what we have accomplished. We have a team that for the large part is made up of freshmen and sophomores.

The future is bright at Middle Tennessee, but we have to stay on the wagon for the hard times. On a side note, it was great to meet so many Virginia fans at the game. They were a class act and we welcome you all back anytime. To Middle Tennessee fans I just say this: The good times are coming and you will want to be here when it happens!

As the blue lights of the Murfreesboro Police motorcade escorts the Virginia football team away from Floyd Stadium I am split between the disappointment of the loss and the excitement of facing an ACC opponent. With only 1:58 left in the game I could taste victory - yet only moments later I hear the Virginia victory fight song. Tonight I revel in the fact that MTSU is facing recognized football programs - and yet my desire is that we are one of those programs. I know give it a few years - yet with only just a few plays away from making tonight’s SportsCenter - the excitement drives our desire to increase the MTSU loyalty base. Go Big Blue!! I look forward to the next game - because baby - we are MTSU!!!

It Depends on Who Shows Up - by Fredo

Oh, what a difference a week makes! Last week, people were all woe is me and this week, we can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Perhaps we have finally found our stride and a little consistency. Florida International is not near as bad a team as we made them look last Saturday. Heck, Miami only hung 29 on them.

Last Saturday offered our team a great opportunity to see many different players in game type situations. While we didn't score in the second half, we didn't allow them to score on offense either.

This week, we have a different test. The Cavaliers of the University of Virginia invade Murfreesboro in what will be the biggest game this town has ever hosted. After the first week of the season, everyone, including this guy, thought we could roll over this Virginia team. But they have gotten it together and are receiving votes in both polls.

This is a great test for our team against a team that is not a top 5 team. This is a winnable game if we play the way we did last weekend. I guarantee you that Virginia can and will score points. But we have shown that we are equally up to the challenge in the offensive department. So, what do we expect on another beautiful Saturday afternoon? It depends on which team shows up. If the team that played Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic shows up, we are in big trouble. However, if the team that played Louisville and Florida international shows, this could be a special afternoon.

So, come out and watch the Blue Raiders play!

Thank God we scored 47 points in the first half; otherwise we would have lost 6-0! Just kidding!!!!! Victory is the sweetest when it comes with your friends! What a difference a week makes! We have a true freshman quarterback that is a stud. He can run and pass with precision. Our defense spent the entire night in FIU’s backfield. Our kicker put three in the endzone. On a night where even Salim Simson saw a great deal of playing time, we are quick to forget last weeks game. This is the display that we expected this season from our team. An offense that moves the ball at will and a defense that can stop the run. I will savor the victory this evening and then wonder why I don’t recover like I used to. GO BLUE RAIDERS and bring on the Cavaliers. -- Fredo

Well, Thursday's game was definitely a disappointment that took a couple of days to get over. But Monday morning was the time to get off the mat and get back on the horse(lets see how many clichés I can get into one blog-that's 2). However, this Saturday is the cure for what ails ya(3)!

We have Florida International coming to the 'boro and bringing with it the nation's longest losing streak. While they have a decent defense, their offense is atrocious. They have not played well in a game yet this season and just got spanked by Kansas. We should be able to hold them to very few points. I am hoping in the last ten days that our defense has learned to tackle. We should have a field day with an offense that hasn't moved the ball all season. Now, our offense should be much better this week now that Dwight Dasher has had 10 days to learn the rest of the offense. This cat is going to be a star for the Blue Raiders before his time here is done.

It is time for the fans to suck it up(4) and support the boys in blue! I will be tailgating early as will the rest of the godfathersbluecrew! I hope to see you all there so that we can celebrate the thrill of victory together!

I can honestly say there were folks here with tents up and music going when I arrived at 8:30 this morning. I should have known better. After all, it is the home opener and we are all a bit craved for a home game. Good thing it is against a local team like WKU. More on that later.

If you are a Blue Raider faithful, or just reading this because I have hounded you to near exhaustion, this is good tailgating to experience. I have been to great places like The Grove in Oxford, the hill in Knoxville, Touchdown Jesus in South Bend and even Pappa John’s Palace in Louisville. They are great tailgate experiences. No doubt. But here, nestled on Greenland Drive in the ‘Boro, we have something going. Maybe it is a little bit of southern hospitality. Maybe it is a dash of our desire to recruit anyone to be a Blue Raider fan (we need lots). Either way, folks that are here to tailgate are here because they are passionate.

Yes, all tailgaters are passionate. Yes, they all have cool gear and great traditions. Trust me, it gives any fan of football chills to watch the ND band march by on their way to the stadium with the throng of fans cheering them on. That is pure football legend and history. But at MT, we are in the evolution of football tailgating infancy. No, I don’t mean we are immature or weak tailgaters. Rather, we don’t have multiple national championships to spur us on. Our program does not strategically schedule our fall to avoid possible losses. Rather, we will play anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Today, we are here. It is great weather. We have ESPN going, beer flowing and games of corn-hole already begun. It is football season, and the Blue Raiders are at home tonight! (ESPN/CSS 6PM)

In my few years as a self-proclaimed professional tailgater, I have found particular rituals to be a glorious part of the undertaking.

Of particular enjoyment is arriving at the parking lot for game day early in the morning while the birds are chirping, the dew is still on the ground and the crisp air that is unwarmed by the sun blows by. This is the beautiful solitude that is being among the first people to arrive.

The feeling you get as you set up your tailgate tents in just the right pattern to get maximum coverage without taking up too much space. Placing weights on the tent for security. Even taking the time to measure out the position of cornhole or other entertainment. Nothing beats setting up the satellite dish and and hitting a 95 in signal strength on the first try.

Of course you can't forget the single most important part of tailgating: the grill. Ever notice how important it is to position the grill for maximum cooking space with minimum smoke. Or, better yet, how crucial it is to find that perfect spot for it so that you don't end up downwind from thick grey smoke. This is where you can tell the difference in a novice once-per-yer player and a pro.

Then, it gets good. If you are a morning 'gater (all pros must be) next comes the vodka and bloody mary mix and those few minutes of relaxation before the crowd arrives.

We can't play down the value of the crowd though. Once the crowd starts to arrive, the pro gets to work. Sometimes it is simply friends and family. However, a real tailgater will always be ready for long lost friends, VIPs and other admirers. Most important is being prepared for opposing fans as we subscribe to the theory that visiting fans deserve your very best. After all, they should leave your field taking comfort that, while they lost, they learned something about tailgating from you.

Stop by sometime and enjoy our way of doing things. Munch down a burger. Toss back a cold one. It's time to see the Blue Raiders play!

What is that thing?

For anyone who did not watch or listen to the game on Saturday, it looks like we got pounded on paper. But to those that saw it, we saw a team continue to grow. Louisiana State University will be playing for the national championship and we witnessed why on Saturday.

The MT offense could not move against a team that was bigger and faster than us. However, our defense played well on Saturday. We forced LSU's first two turnovers and held our own against a great offense.

Now we turn our attention to Western Kentucky. This game is important for a number of reasons. First, we get to come home. We will be playing in the friendly confines of Floyd Stadium for the first time this year. Our boys are ready to come home and we are ready to see them and tailgate! Second, the Toppers present a challenging opponent, but one we should beat. They played a respectable game against Florida, but then played cupcakes in West Virginia Tech and Eastern Kentucky.

This is the renewal of a fierce rivalry from back in the 90's. It also brings full circle a rivalry between two schools 90 minutes apart that spans all sports. The fans from these two schools love to hate each other. Tailgating for this game will start early, so bring your tents, chairs, and beverages, and lets have a good time while we put a beat down on a new rival, showing them that while they may be 1-A in most sports, this is how we do things in the big leagues!

MT goes to the bayou - by Fredo

On Saturday, our boys head down to the Bayou to take on the Tigers of Louisiana State University. On the surface, this looks like a mismatch of gargantuan proportions, but I assure you that it is not. The only question is which offense will show up? The one that could not move the ball against Florida Atlantic, or the spread that moved at will against then #8 Louisville. We have the first team speed to move the ball against LSU, but their defense will be much better than what we have seen thus far. Our defense could be in for a long night, but LSU has not felt the hitting that they will feel on Saturday night. This game will boil down to a couple of things. LSU is going to move the ball. We must move the ball with them. We must hold on to the ball, which has been our downfall in both games this year. While I am not suffering from delusions of grandeur, I definitely think we can make another statement on Saturday. Also, if you are so inclined to watch the game, Kirkenburts on Cason Lane and Bleachers in Franklin have bought the pay per view and will be sponsoring tailgate parties on Saturday. Bring your tents, chairs, and other tailgate paraphernalia and watch the game.
